This famously romantic scene was shown in 1998 in the Between Darkness and Dawn exhibition at The Portland Gallery. The title is taken from a song by Leonard Cohen, who is one of Vettriano’s favourite singers. This is one of a series of paintings from the early 1990’s that Vettriano has set on beaches and which are inspired by the coastal views local to him when he was growing up on the East coast of Scotland.
